Today at our management meeting we remembered Thomas, a young man with down syndrome and autism, he didn’t live in Essex he was from Bradford and had been staying in a treatment and assessment unit in Sheffield. Thomas didn’t want to be there and his family didn’t want him to be there but their wishes were ignored. Sadly on the 4th of February 2015 Thomas died, he stopped breathing whilst in the care of the unit and died three days later in hospital.
Thomas was let down by a system which is supposed to protect him.
There has to be a thorough investigation into the details of Thomas’ care, and subsequent death. Today on the day of his funeral we think of Thomas and his family. We think of other families who feel their views are being ignored by the system. None of us know what fate awaits us . . . one day we or one of our family could be Thomas. Today we stood together to say # I am Thomas.
