The system is not working with us: Learning from Family Carers in Essex

We wanted to update you on discussions which are taking place between Essex County Council and families caring for working aged adults with learning disabilities.  Earlier this year, the Council invited Essex Carers Network and Essex Mencap Society to work with them to plan improved ways of supporting family carers. They wanted to better understand the experiences and the needs of families and to gather views on what radically improved types support might look like. They were seeking our help at an early stage, before any decisions had been made, so that the views of families could directly influence the shape of future services.

In response to this invitation, we ran a series of three engagement events with family carers in August and September 2014 in Braintree, Hadleigh and Colchester. On each occasion, family carers  joined us to share their views. We produced a report from these events to share key messages more widely. The system is not working with us: Learning from Family Carers in Essex is currently being tabled across the Council and its findings are being discussed at the highest level.
